Teen Support and Social Skills Group
Basic Facts: The Teen Support & Social Skills Group (approximate age range 13-15) meets one hour per week
(see "group schedules" for current dates and
times). There is a six-week commitment required and the group members are given the choice of continuing longer if they desire to do so. The group is designed for individuals who may be experiencing difficulty with social skills including; "fitting in" with peers, managing their anger appropriately, assertiveness, time management and communication with parents and other adults. The support aspects of the group are designed to help individuals who may be suffering from stress, low self esteem, anxiety and depression.
Appropriate Referrals: This group is appropriate for individuals who are experiencing difficulties with social development. Symptoms may include social isolation, choosing inappropriate peers, anger, loneliness, depression and social anxiety (note: computer/internet addiction may also be a symptom).
Group Rationale: Group therapy for teens is an excellent adjunct
to individual and/or family therapy. Often individuals are more open to feedback
from peers than they are to feedback from authority figures (i.e. counselors,
parents and teachers). This is particularly true with adolescents, who may
have a rebellious attitude towards authority. Group therapy offers a safe
environment for teens to explore their thoughts and feelings, while at the
same time empowering them to use their own personal strengths to help each
other.
